My fascination with soulmates started a few years ago when I broke up from a serious three-year-long relationship. It was a difficult one as we both felt magical in this connection. To tell you the truth, it was extraordinary, serendipitous, and utterly divine, I was drunk in love! I felt insanely at peace when I was with him, he felt like home.

But on the other hand, I was not growing as an individual. Both of us had unhealed toxic energies that came along the way of having a healthy relationship. For it to work, either one of us had to elevate for the better or stay stagnated for the worst and each of us chose our own frequencies and decided to part ways for good.

He was not my soulmate but most likely a trauma bond or a karmic connection who taught me a lot of lessons about myself and life, nevertheless.

Zohar on Soulmates

Perhaps an effect of my broken heart or the numerous romantic novels I consumed as a teenager, I had the urge to get to the bottom of “soulmates”. I wanted to know if there was indeed any truth, any logical basis to the idea of soulmates.

In my quest, I came across — The Book of Zohar, one of the most important books of Jewish mysticism from where originated the concept of soulmates.

In this book, it is said that there is only one primordial soul in the world. This one soul/consciousness splits into two halves of masculine and feminine energy and disseminates sparks throughout the universe. Every life you see is a manifestation of this divine soul spark through which the Creator experiences itself. In this way, you and the Creator are one.

Quoting from the Zohar,

“Before coming to this Earth, each soul and each spirit is composed of one man and one woman united in one single being. Descending to Earth, these two halves are separated and sent to incarnate in two different bodies. When it’s time for marriage, God unites them as before.”

The two halves are said to have 613 limbs and each limb being a root in itself contains another 600,000 smaller limbs.

Thus, multiplying 613 limbs with 600,000 smaller limbs, results in over three and a half billion soul-roots. Each of these soul roots further divides into 600,000 different souls creating sub-soul roots and the process continues akin to the repeating patterns of a fractal figure.

So is Kabbalah saying that out of the billion souls in the universe, you only have one soulmate?

An Abstract Concept of Soulmates

No, it’s more complex than that. But before we address that, let us also highlight a few other questions a deep dive into this concept arises.

For instance, let’s say your soulmate is stuck in another life and has not reincarnated with you in this lifetime then do you not find a soulmate in this life? Do soulmates always need to be in romantic relationships? Can they not be friends or siblings?

Since everything is energy and we only attract our vibrational frequency, then by this logic can we not have multiple soulmates at different levels of our personal and spiritual development?

What is the difference between soulmates and twin flames? What is the definition of a soulmate? Do soulmates connect to serve a divine cause?

Nature of the Soul & Proof of Soulmates

The soul is dual in nature. Every masculine part of the original soul has an inherent feminine energy in it. The Buddhist symbol of yin-yang is the best depiction of this ideology. The yin in the yang and vice versa describe the inherent duality of the soul. The duality that exists between your mind and heart is another representation of this ideology.

Now imagine an enormous jigsaw puzzle with billions of sparks, but only 613 variations in which the sparks fit together. Since there are 613 variations, it implies that every piece has more than one match and the puzzle can be solved in an infinite number of ways.

Thus, by this logic, there are infinite possible combinations of soulmate connections you can have. It does not defy the law of attraction anymore, does it? While you will attract people of your vibrational frequency it will be your free will choice to nurture those connections or not.

It is not necessary that you need to be involved in a romantic relationship with your soulmate. It depends on your life purpose the form in which you will encounter your soulmate(s). I have my best friend who I consider as my soulmate. She has been my sister, guide, and a person who understands me more than I even do. I cannot imagine navigating my life without her.

Sometimes a soul connection might be disguised as a twin flame connection. The latter is a karmic connection where the two partners involved reflect the parts of themselves that require healing. Your partner will reflect the unhealed parts of your psyche triggering you subconsciously. The illusion is strong, you have to learn to see past it if you want to break free. Learn to observe your dynamic neutrally, be aware of your actions, and check if they are in alignment with your highest values if you’re stuck in a karmic connection.

The soulmate dynamic, on the other hand, is an elevated connection between two individuals who have cleared their karma and healed themselves. They are the best version of themselves, having integrated their anima-animus complex, mastered the duality of their soul and individuated. The two individuals both whole in themselves then come together to form a partnership that is divine and harmonious.

Soulmates satisfy Carl Jung’s idea of individuation. Once the anima-animus integration is complete, you will attain an elevated state of consciousness that is beyond societal conditioning. From this energy, you will attract a partner — a vibrational match to your energy — your soulmate.

And together you will execute the divine plan of elevating more individuals to this state by sharing your light with the world and becoming a star in your own right.

Thus, to define a soulmate, I’d like to summarize the words of a renowned spiritual teacher and healer, Cristina Lopez, who explains this concept so beautifully.

A sacred partnership is a relationship of pure unconditional love and total acceptance of self and others. It is beyond any other gimmicks of love such as attachment, trauma bonds or karmic connections. There are no masks in this relationship, you are 100% authentic with each other even if that means revealing your most vulnerable self, there is no shame or guilt. A relationship where both individuals are sovereign and standing on their own two feet instead of being enmeshed in a codependent partnership that lacks boundaries. Your personal sovereignty is intact in this relationship. The two whole individuals engage in the partnership from a space of interdependence where they truly and deeply care for the happiness of the other.

So have you found your soulmate yet? I rest assured knowing that he exists somewhere in the Universe only a speck of chance away from finding his soulmate.
